Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
