"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile supporters have also petitioned for the role.

It's clear a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos often show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global following.

However the sister act will always be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
