Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
