Christantus Uche Sparks Comfortable Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Missing key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season were no match even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
